Genre Research: Action

                                                   How is it Action?

Action is a fast-moving pace of story genre where the viewer is constantly engaged in the film with many things going on at once like fights, explosions, and chases. This also makes it so Action can also be seen with many sub-genres added onto it such as Action-Horror or most commonly, Action-Adventure.

The usual target audience that hooks in people to Action films are the younger male generations due to the thrill and excitement they get while watching it. An example of an Action film is Raiders of the lost Ark and other Indiana Jones films which pulls in a good amount of these types of audience and kept making the movies more and more with making over $2.1 billion.

The conflict of the story is very big when making Action like films since it shows that the protagonist and others have to fight and get through so much to solve the conflict since the conflict is the center piece of making films in general and how films are made and ran.

Some of the conventions in Action films that people would see in Action films and what gets people engaged are the protagonist v antagonist, showing the protagonist much weaker than the antagonist and physically overpowered, the environment or setting that they are placed in gives more conflict from what's going on in the film, (listed from definition) the fights, chases, and explosions add to the Action aspect of films and many others like a time limit that the protagonist has for the conflict or masters they look upon as shown in the film karate kid with Larusso(Ralph Macchio) the kid and Mr. Miyagi(Pat Morita) the master.

Another general factor is the sound during the film in which the fights would be an up-tempo beat going on during fights or chases with characters screaming showing many things like being courageous or freighted.

Action films are very over the top with their production techniques in the actors having to do crazy stunts with Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible grabbing onto a real plane going up 1,000 feet and crazy speeds of a moving airplane taking off into the air and Jackie Chan notoriously known for his crazy stunts make the viewers more thrilled to watch. Special effects, fast-paced editing during the fights and chases with the usage of camera shots like close-ups and long shots showing the condition they are in and the type of location that the film takes place in the film.

How Action films market their movies is they like to show the most engaging parts of the films like during fight or chase scenes in trailers or sneak peaks for the viewers that makes them more anticipated to watch while showing what the movie conflict is being shown as and showing characters in the films . Since the younger audience is drawn more toward these types of films, the film producers would promote an incoming film through social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube as most of the younger people use it.

Sample #1: Iron Man

The film Iron Man (2008) is the start of the iron man series of movies and shows a wise billionaire who built Iron Man. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was kidnapped by terrorists while he was testing weapons away from home and the terrorists forced Tony to make them a deadly weapon but in turn, he builds iron man and goes back home to take down his business partner Obadiah Stone (Jeff Bridges) who betrayed him and Stone building the Iron Monger to take down stark industries. Stark and Stones fight shows pure Action with the music, the explosions with the powers they possess in the machine they have built, the destruction they make and the environment they are fighting in on a roof. The poster describes how stark has another form being iron man with Stone (Bald guy) staring menacingly wanting to take down stark and shows a little foreshadowing with his look.

Sample #2: Rocky

The film Rocky (1976) is the first film to many rocky films which shows a fighter getting one shot to prove himself. Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is a loan shark and is a small-time boxer from Philadelphia and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is mad that his next opponent is injured and cannot fight Creed, so he gets an idea to pick a lucky kid from Philadelphia to fight Creed and Rocky was chosen. Rocky trains with Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith) and Rocky has to prepare for the fight of his life and a shot at being known to become a boxer. This film has lots of action in it with mainly the boxer aspect and the training with the fight between Creed and Rocky and the chases when Rocky was doing his job as a loan shark. The poster shows Rocky's determination to becoming a boxer and a kid nobody ever believed in.

Some other films like this:

John Wick (2014)

Venom (2021)

Twisters(2024)

Black Panther(2018)

Aliens(1986)

Representation

I am going to be talking about representation today about one of my favorite video games of all time, Yakuza 0 and how they show off the representation and how life was like for the yakuza and civilians in the 80s in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

The first part of describing how this game is represented is the yakuza itself and how they treat other people or civilians as inferior individuals compared to them. Another thing also is being a lower-ranking member of the yakuza compared to others in which they treat the lieutenant, captain, or patriarch(boss) as some god and doing all the tasks they ask and are forced to obey or else they get kicked out, beaten up and possibly killed.

The second part I will be describing on how they represent this game is gender inequality with the females and how they are mistreated back then. They portrayed a meaning that giving girls a ton of money will make them instantly attracted to you with having a side mini game in which you run your own cabaret club and have to defeat this group who are abusing their powers with their money and the women they have. Another thing here is that this game has its fair share of moments with men sexually harassing the females

The final part is the main characters and how they are personally treated. They both show a good side part of them while having to fight to stay alive against the yakuza. They have inspiring but dark backstories that describe how they were like growing up in the 80s with the yakuza.

Sound Project

After finishing the One Word Film, we started to study sound in which we learned how important but unnoticed sound is in everything and how certain sounds are made by a thing called Foley, basically creating a sound with other objects.

For our project for sound, we had to portray a scene using only sound and we got assigned a partner to work with, we also had to create 4 Foley sounds during this project.

What we came up with is an arcade scene playing a motorcycle game adding sounds like arcade noises in the background, instrumental of hip-hop songs, and motorcycle sounds and the sounds we added with Foley were things like coins jingling, footsteps  and bells jingling. During the brainstorming, we divided all the sounds into certain scenes that turned into our outline which guided us through the project in what to import into the project and what order to add all the sounds in and we used the Adobe Premiere rush to edit our project

Overall I think we did good on our project with the sound choices, Foley's that we made and the idea overall that I thought was a great example to describe sound and one thing that brought this project down was the editing on it.
